New borehole for Sher Elementary School in Adami Tulu

Last week a borehole was drilled at our Elementary School site in Adami Tulu. This year, construction of the first 4 classrooms will start. The new school is very near to the Sher Kindergarten that now has 350 students. Preparations have begun for the new Elementary School starting with the basics: water and electricity.

At 77 meters deep water was struck. Thanks to Christian Service International, who are helping us to improve the water availability at all our school-sites. Now we have abundant water to irrigate our trees and plants and flush the lavatories. Borehole water will also be made available, free of charge, via water taps to members of the local community.

Construction of the new Sher Elementary school will bring much needed development in terms of education, employment, and infrastructure.

Mela for Her: supporting young girls with sustainable menstrual solutions

5 December 2022 Aswin Endeman
Mala ishiif: fala waaraa marsaa laguu ijoollee shamarraniif

Recently we started a new project for 1300 female students at our Sher-schools: Mela for her. Mela (መላ) means solution in Amharic. A solution for a problem that unfortunately exists for many young women and girls in Africa: a lack of affordable sanitary products.

For many people, menstrual hygiene is an inconvenience or taboo. For millions of girls around the world, it can pose barriers to education, health, self-esteem, and human rights. And for many, the start of menstruation typically means a loss of days in school.

MELA FOR HER is an Ethiopian social start-up enterprise that transforms women and girls’ lives across Ethiopia by providing them with affordable and eco-friendly menstrual products and menstrual health education. The Sher-schools and Mela for her teamed up and with the help of the Dutch Flower Foundation we will provide 1300 girls, in the age of 11-18 years, with a kit of menstrual aid products. Besides the kits, a team of experts will train a group of Sher-school teachers and through the girls-club all 1300 students will be offered a training on menstrual health.

We would like to thank the Mela for her team for the fruitful collaboration and we sincerely thank the Dutch Flower Foundation for their support now and their commitment to this project in the future. Together we contribute to a world where girls can enjoy their right to dignity so they can reach their full potential in life.

Farmers’ Forest Day and Biodiversity

3 December 2022 Aswin Endeman
የገበሬዎች የደን ቀን እና ብዝሃ ህይወት

On Sunday November 26 Farmer Forest Day was celebrated at the Worja Kamo Hill. In this project we focus on reforestation and restoration of degraded lands together with IDH, VOCDA and the local community. Close to one million trees have been planted over the last 5 years.

During the celebration, attended by approx. 200 persons, the achievements of the project were celebrated. The area of 200 ha has revived, and biodiversity has increased. The project shows that communities can benefit from eco-friendly agriculture, forestry and income generating activities such as organic honey and Moringa soap production.

Recently, researchers have conducted a survey to assess the biodiversity of the rehabilitated area. Their findings are that the Worja micro-catchment is endowed with at least 29 tree and shrub species. This makes the micro-catchment far richer in species diversity and abundance than its adjacent surroundings where only a few tree species are observed scattered in the farm fields. Therefore, Worja micro-catchment can serve as a gene pool and seed reserve hotspot for important tree and shrub species.

Though the abundance of insects found in that area of land is high, their diversity is relatively low which is related to the fact there is lower coverage of vegetation which calls for the conservation and plantation of the area.

During the survey, 99 species of birds were spotted of which 6 are threatened birds’ species. Especially the three vulture species in the area are critically endangered and are found nesting and in good numbers in the area. Even more reason to continue with the project and keep all stakeholders aligned.

Sher and Van Dijk Flora join forces and start School Milk Project

26 October 2022 Aswin Endeman

We recently started a special project in Ethiopia together with Van Dijk Flora and Dutch Flower Foundation. This school year, 1350 students at Sher schools aged 4 to 6 will receive a portion of probiotic yogurt full of healthy nutrients and building materials twice a week. One serving of milk provides a 5-year-old with 33% of the daily protein requirement and 10% of the daily calories. The yogurt is added to the existing hot meal that all KG-students receive every day at school.

With this project we make sure that children get the nutritious food they need. In this way we reduce the risk of malnutrition and increase the attendance of the children. For this project, there is a collaboration with two local dairy farmers where their sales are guaranteed, which provides work for no fewer than sixteen people.

We are very grateful with this generous help from our partners van Dijk Flora and Dutch Flower Foundation and would like to thank them on behalf of all the children, parents and teachers at the Sher schools.
